PVC Inflatable Boat Fabric
A popular choice for inflatable boats, PVC is a synthetic material that offers strong resistance to UV, water, and chemicals. It is also very durable, easy to repair, and incredibly lightweight.
There are several different types of PVC boat fabrics, including coated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fabric and hypalon or urethane fabric. Both are designed to be very resistant to punctures and abrasions, and they are available in a variety of colors and thicknesses.
The most common type of PVC boat fabric is a coated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on polyester scrim. It is a great choice for boats because it has great strength, and is much cheaper than Hypalon fabric.
Another popular option for inflatable boats is a synthetic rubber-based fabric, called Hypalon. It was the material of choice for a long time, but production costs rose and it was discontinued by DuPont in 2010.
If you are unsure whether your boat is made from a PVC or hypalon fabric, the easiest way to know is to look at the seams. If the seams are welded, they are likely a PVC boat. They will often show a narrow overlap and impressions.
While it is possible to find an inflatable boat that is made from Hypalon, you are unlikely to see a high-end model made with this fabric. It is no longer being produced for a number of reasons, including safety and environmental concerns.
Most of the commercial inflatables we make are made from a PVC material, because it is much more affordable and lasts much longer than a Hypalon boat. Some manufacturers, such as Magic Jump, also use hot air welding on their seams.
These seams are much faster and more efficient than hand-gluing. It is not uncommon for a hot air weld to take less than 30 seconds!
Some PVC-covered fabric is also reinforced, meaning it has an extra layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) added to it. This adds even more strength to the boat and helps it resist rips and tears.
Unlike Hypalon, however, PVC fabric is prone to fading if it is not properly cared for. It needs to be cleaned occasionally, and it should be stored away from the sun.
This will keep the fabric from aging and help it last longer. It will also help prevent other substances such as oils and dirt from working their way into the fabric, which can speed up deterioration.
In addition, storing the boat in a well-ventilated, shaded area will help prevent excess humidity from building up and wreaking havoc on the glue used in its construction. Humidity can weaken the bond between the glue and the plastic, which will cause the boat to break apart over time.
PVC boats are great for recreational uses, but they do need a little care and maintenance to ensure they last as long as possible. These simple steps will help you extend the life of your inflatable dinghy and allow you to enjoy it for years to come.
