PVC Inflatable Fabric
PVC Inflatable Fabric is the material that most inflatable boats are made of. It is a durable, light-weight material that resists punctures and deterioration.
The material has a long history of use in the construction industry and has become an essential polymer for various industries, including the leisure and construction sectors. It is a polyvinyl chloride that is chemically treated to increase its strength and durability.
Most inflatable boats are made from either PVC or CSM/Hypalon (also known as Orca/DuPont Hypalon). The former is a patented fabric by DuPont that was originally manufactured for the boating industry and was discontinued in 2010 and replaced with Orca/DuPont CSM.
CSM/Hypalon is a synthetic rubber and neoprene composite that was formerly a popular choice for high-end inflatable boats. The resulting material was known for its ability to stand up to heat, sunlight, and chemicals like gasoline, though it is less resistant to abrasions than PVC fabrics.
The fabric is coated with a layer of plasticizers and phthalates, which makes it more flexible and water-resistant. These additives are also less harmful to the environment than the traditional plasticizers used in PVC fabric production.
It is a very common material for inflatable boats, especially in hot and humid climates. However, it can deteriorate over time with UV exposure and needs to be treated and maintained properly.
When choosing a fabric for your inflatable boat, consider the location where it will be stored and how frequently you plan to use it. If you live in a cooler climate, you can expect your boat to last significantly longer than if it was inflated in a tropical area.
Inflatables should be stored away from direct sunlight and humidity as the glue used in assembling the boat can break down due to heat and moisture. This is especially important when storing the boat in a closed container or box where it can be left out in the sun for prolonged periods of time.
You should clean your inflatable boat regularly and never use bleach or ammonia as it will eat away at the fabric. You should also avoid using abrasive cleaning pads or steel wool as these can scratch and damage the material.
If you do choose to use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, be sure to rinse them off thoroughly before you put the boat back in storage. You should also be very careful not to leave abrasive cleaner residues on the fabric as these can attract dirt and bacteria, which will lead to permanent damages.
Finally, you should never pin the seams together as this will cause holes in the material that will bleed through the fabric when it is stretched. Instead, use double face basting tape to hold the seam in place before stitching. This will prevent the fabric from stretching and curling during sewing.
PVC fabric is a good choice for most people, but it does require some care and attention to keep it in good condition. It is best to choose a fabric that will be most durable for your particular situation, so you can enjoy it for years to come.
